Intense aerobic exercise and antihypertensive treatment reduces high blood pressure

Research carried out at the Faculty of Sports Sciences at the University of Castilla-La Mancha has been recognised by the 24th Congress of the Spanish society of Hypertension, recently held in Madrid, on confirming that by combining antihypertension medicine and a session of aerobic exercise blood pressure in hypertense patients can be reduced, in such a way that normotensive values close to 120/80mm Hg were obtained over the following 24 hours.

In Spain, 42% of the adult population suffer from high blood pressure, a factor which dramatically increases the risk of death or from suffering a heart attack. Antihypertension medicines as well as recommendations for doing aerobic exercise are just some of the treatments for reducing blood pressure for these patients "Scientific evidence has proved that both medicine and aerobic exercise each reduce blood pressure, but not until now has the effect of combining both treatments in people with high blood pressure been discovered", said the researcher Miguel Ramírez Jiménez.

In order to bridge this gap in knowledge, the Laboratory of the Physiology of Exercise at the UCLM carried out research on twelve people who suffered from blood pressure. The participate underwent three tests:a control day, another day with a placebo and exercise and a third day in which exercise and antihypertension medicine was used. "The results showed that by combining antihypertension medicine with a session of intense aerobic exercise high blood pressure was reduced to such an extent that normotensive values close to 120/80mm Hg were achieved for the next 24 hours" the researcher explained. "This shows better control of high blood pressure and incorporates physical exercise into typical treatments for people suffering from this", he remarked.
