The University of Castilla-La Mancha on the initiative of the library and in collaboration with the areas of   research and ITC  considers  the ORCID initiative can solve many problems arising from the different signature possibilities an author has. Therefore, the Governing Council of the  UCLM, in its meeting held on the 13th of April 2015, approved the establishment of the ORCID system (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) as the standard research model for its researchers.

The UCLM, by means of the university Library in 2015 signed a licence for attachment to the ORCID project, having already joined  this project as an  institutional member .

Thanks to there being an unmistakeable code, ORCID hopes to improve and speed up procedures in which distinguishing the author is fundamental, such as loading bibliographical data onto the researcher Curriculum Vitae, which will  streamline writing a CVN (normalised CV), the research report; the application  formalities and monitoring the research funding, etc....

What is ORCID? 

Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is a persistent identifier of authors. ORCID is a not-for-profit international organization which provides a unique and persistent identifier for scientific and academic authors. It is controlled by regulation ISO 27729:2012 and is made up of 16 digits. This identifier enables researchers to have a profile on the ORCID platform, with data that is controlled at all times by the researcher himself or herself who decides what information to publish and what to keep access to restricted. What is it used for? 

• It enables the institution, financial organisations and editors to monitor scientific and academic papers from researchers.

• It promotes the researcher evaluation process.

• It provides assurance to researchers that their papers will be associated with them.

• It speeds up application formalities and monitoring of research funding.

• It gives institutions greater visibility through their researchers.

• It gives the UCLM more international visibility.

• It can be used as part of the researcher signature.

• It can be synchronised with bibliographical databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Dialnet to retrieve information from publications that have already been indexed or to export data from ORCID to other applications.

What advantages does it provide? 

• It is accepted by such high standing scientific publishers as Nature, Elsevier, Thomson-Reuters, CrossRef, Springer, Wiley, etc.

• The ORCID unique identifier is independent and has been normalized in accordance with regulation ISO 27729:2012. It has 16 digits which make up a unique, persistent code associated with each author registered on ORCID. (example. http://orcid.org/0001­0001­0001­0001)

• Regardless of the institutions in which researchers do their research throughout their lives, theirresearcher ORCID ID will remain the same.

• With ORCID thenames"disambiguation"problem is resolved, thereby preventing confusion as regards the authorship of research work carried out by different researcherswith names that coincide or are similar.

• ORCID integrates the identifier in the work processes inherent to scientific communication, such as sending articles to publishers to be published.

How is an ORCID code obtained? 

• Researchers who already have an ORCID identifier: must send an email to orcid@uclm.es showing their ORCID number. Afterwards the UCLM will link their ORCID number to the normalized name of the institution.

• Researchers who do not have an ORCID identifier: must register on this ORCID page  following the instructions included in the  ORCID guide

• From that time you will be able to use that code and include it as part of your signature for any procedure: when sending articles to be published, request funding, participate in conferences, etc.... You can also include it on your website, your CV or on any other forum related to your professional activity.

• In both events researchers will have full control over their ORCID profiles.

What information does the ORCID identifier contain? 

• Information registered on ORCID is structured into different sections; personal information, scientific-technical publications, institutional affiliation, training, subsidies....

• The ORCID profile can be edited and amended by the owner using their username and password and can be visualized with the following privacy levels:

1. Public: Information is shown publically and can be used by any user               
2. Restricted: Information can be visualized by the researcher and bytrusted third parties
3. Private: Information can only be visualized by the researcher (not by third parties)
