BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FACULTY.

The Faculty of Chemical Sciences &Technologies of Ciudad Real began its teaching and research activity in October 1985, because of the creation of the University of Castilla-La Mancha. In that moment, a previously existing satellite center of University Complutense (so-called Colegio Universitario) was integrated in the new University and the part related to Chemical Sciences was renamed as Faculty of Chemical Sciences in the new institution. That previous satellite was founded in 1973 and did not offer the complete undergraduate program in Chemistry but only three years of the former Bachelor's Degree (equivalent to an undergraduate program), being necessary to complete the full program in Madrid.

Most relevant milestones:

In the period 1985-1988 the first long-cycle five-year Curriculum in Chemical Sciences (3+2) was elaborated with two specialties in the second cycle (equivalent to a post-graduation program): Fundamental Chemistry and Agri-food Chemistry. In this Plan, a considerable number of elective courses were offered. The students had to take and pass a total of 360 credits to get the diploma.

In addition, at this stage, young doctors from different universities were incorporated through public calls. These new faculties contributed to develop the first research groups in different areas of knowledge. The implementation of the second cycle allowed the incorporation of the first Full Professors, and the integration of many postdocs as Associate Professors.

In 1988, the first university department was created (Department of Chemistry), joining all the faculties of the areas Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Food Science &Technology, not only of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences but of the entire University of Castilla-La Mancha. Professor Ernesto Martínez Ataz was the first Head of this department. In 1990, this department was subdivided into the current ones, that still have their administrative offices in the Faculty: Chemical Engineering, Analytical Chemistry and Food Technology, Physical Chemistry, and Inorganic& Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. At this stage, the academic portfolio of the Faculty was also expanded, with the implementation of the specialty of Chemical Engineering in the second cycle. Likewise, the construction of a new building (San Alberto Magno) was approved, and the building works began, under the supervision of the Architect Mr. Fernández Alba and were concluded in 1992. Then, the headquarters of the Faculty moved from the former building to the San Alberto Magno Building in the academic year  1992-1993, and this new building was officially inaugurated on March 15, 1993 by the Minister of Education and Science of the Spanish Goverment D. Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba (former professor of Organic Chemistry of the former University Complutense satellite delegation).

During the period 1991-1997 the Faculty of Chemical Sciences was consolidated and the teaching activies were not only carried out in the new San Alberto Magno building, but also in a new common building, plenty of lecture rooms (Juan de Mariana Building).  The changes in the regulations with the publication of the R.D. of Reform of Curricula allowed to undertake transcendental changes for our Faculty. Thus, the specialty of Agri-food Chemistry was transformed into the degree program (long cycle equivalent to undergraduate and master) in Food Science and Technology (first graduates in 1996), the specialty of Fundamental Chemistry into the degree program in Chemistry (first graduates in 1997) and that of Chemical Engineering in the degree program in Chemical Engineering (first graduates in 1998). The contents in this portfolio of academic programs were modified again in 1999.

During the academic year 2003-2004, the adaptation of the curricula to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) began, with the development of pilot plans for the different academic programs of the Faculty, which incorporated new aspects of teaching innovation. These experiences facilitated the design of the curricula adapted to R.D. 1393/2007, which took place in the period 2007-2008 and which made possible the verification by ANECA of the undergraduate and master programs of our Faculty, which were subsequently approved by the Council of Universities. In the academic year 2010-2011, the new undergraduate and master's programs were implemented.

At the beginning of 2011, as a result of an internal debate, it was decided and approved by the Faculty Board the modification of the name of the Center from the former “Faculty of Chemical Sciences” to “Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Technologies", which was subsequently ratified by the Governing Council of the UCLM and definitively approved by Decree 68/2012 of the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla – La Mancha.

During the academic year 2012-2013 the adaptation of the doctoral programs of the Faculty to the R.D. 99/2011 took place, in coherence with the structure of university education within the framework of the EHEA, which were verified and implemented from 2013.

In recent years, the Faculty has undergone a considerable growth, currently using 4 buildings: San Alberto Magno, Francisco Fernández Iparraguirre (now renamed as Margarita Salas), Enrique Costa Novella and Marie Curie. This has been necessary because of the increase in human, material, and infrastructure resources.

At present, the Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Technologies of the UCLM is a reference center, both for its history and for its teaching quality, research excellence and its capacity for technology transfer. Likewise, for its magnificent relations with the secondary and Vocational Training centers, and its close relationship with the productive and business sectors. 1. Professionals with a clear focus on the future

The center has been training professionals of the highest qualification for more than thirty years. Industries, official institutions, and educational institutions have in their staff numerous professionals graduated from the different academic programs offered by the Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Technologies.

Probably the field in which the Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Technologies stands out most clearly is in research and technological innovation. The teaching staff is immersed in a culture of scientific-technological excellence.

 

The interaction between this center and society contributes to the development of the industrial fabric of Castilla-La Mancha, as a direct consequence of the technological assistance that faculties provide to companies, a situation that is reflected in the numerous research contracts that are usually carried out annually in the center.

Few schools can boast of having had in their staff professors awarded with the Principe de Asturias award. Many scientists of our faculty have been recognized with European, national and regional awards. Scientific production makes chemical science and technology the most valued disciplines of our University within the international context.

4. Undergraduate program in Chemistry

The chemist is a professional, scientist and researcher, whose functions range from the study of new products and materials, and the analysis of their properties and their transformations, to the design of their preparation methods.

5. Undergraduate program in in Chemical Engineering

The Chemical Engineer is the professional who is responsible for the realization on an industrial scale of chemical transformations capable to improve the quality of life and is, at the same time, an expert in processes related to energy and the environment.

 

It is responsible for the research and production of fuels, cosmetics, medicines, cleaning products, plastics, etc.

In addition, Chemical Engineering is one of the few engineering programs that has international recognition, being the highest paid technological profession in most EU countries and in the USA.

6. Undergraduate program in Food Science and Technology

The Food Scientist and technologist can work in any food-related company in positions related to management, R&D, quality control and food and health. Graduates in Food Science and Technology are occupying positions of great responsibility in the direction and management of companies in the food sector, both nationally and internationally with a employment insertion rate of 100%.
